Spokane, Washington probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind when you think of great vegan food. But with a metro population of nearly half a million, Spokane is the second largest city in the state of Washington. It’s also the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis. (Yes, some parts of the northwest are still that underpopulated!)

As the number of people living here grows, so does the list of restaurants that offer vegan options. It’s no Portland, but you’ll still find an impressive array of options. There are the national go to spots: Panera, MOD Pizza, Blaze, and Chipotle. But there are also plenty of local eateries with everything from curry, sushi, Mediterranean, and Ethiopian fare, to ice cream, and of course, donuts.

vegan waffle Boots Bakery Spokane

Boots Bakery & Lounge
Although the name of this place implies that it’s just a baked goods shop, it isn’t. From the the exposed brick wall to the blenders as light fixtures, you know this place is cool from the moment you enter. Boots has a great deli case with a changing selection of things like potato salad, pasta and tofu scramble. On weekends they have a special brunch menu that includes biscuits and gravy, cinnamon rolls and “sausage” hash. Everything is vegan and most of it is gluten free. Our favorite thing by far is the sweet potato waffle with chai butter. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! And if you’re feeling indulgent, the boozy brownie is rich and decadent and worth every calorie. Check their calendar for upcoming music events and slam poetry.

Allie’s Vegan Pizzeria & Café
Like Boots, Allie’s is one of the few restaurants that is completely vegan. They make all of their pizza dough and cheeses in house, and omigosh are they good! Where else can a vegan enjoy Thai Peanut Pizza, Chick’n Bac’n Ranch Pizza and cheesecake for dessert? Weekend brunch includes Crabby Benedict and French Toast options, which explains why you might have to wait for a table!

Spokane vegan restaurant

Even though it sounds like an online takeout place, this is actually a sit down restaurant with a nice decor and extensive menu options for every palate. In addition to sushi, you’ll find teriyaki, tempura, ramen, udon, yakisoba and bento boxes with vegetarian and vegan options for all. And don’t skip dessert. Their mochi is yummy!

Saranac Public House
Right across the street from Boots, Saranac Public House has some great vegan options. The appetizer pretzels come with a vegan cheese sauce, the mushroom burger is made in house and the vegan mac and cheese is creamy, tangy and delicious. All available menu items are clearly marked with vegan, vegetarian or gluten free options.

vegan food Spokane

Mizuna Restaurant and Wine Bar
Using local organic vegetables and hormone free meats, Mizuna has been recognized by Bon Apetite and regularly voted one of Spokane’s best restaurants. The Greek Platter appetizer could be a small meal on its own: white bean hummus, roasted eggplant dip, olive tapenade, tomatoes, cucumbers and grilled pita bread. But if you have room for an entree, at lunch time you’ll find great options like the Grilled Chipotle-Lime Wrap with either tofu or mahi mahi, or the Vegan Meatloaf Sandwich. At dinner time you’ll find an extensive vegetarian/vegan menu and some gluten free options as well.

delicious vegan ice cream

The Scoop
Tucked between a residential neighborhood and a school, The Scoop is easy to miss, but if you do, you’ll be missing out on some delicious house-made ice cream. The flavors rotate pretty regularly, but they always have one or two vegan selections. Coffee and sandwiches are available, too.

Casual Friday Donuts
And for those who need their donut fix, Casual Friday is the place to go. They typically have several vegan donut flavors clearly marked in the case.
